about

One of the first songs I started writing on the cello
Inspired by living in a strange house with an eccentric landlady. She told me a story about a painting that was none of the downstairs rooms. Apparently it had been painted by a prisoner who was locked in there over 100 years ago!

lyrics

Now is the time
That you talk about everything
Untie your scarf
Sit down, colour spaces in
And oh to see your eyes light up
With bikes and dates and dust
You go over and over and over and over the same
You put me in you put me in a frame

Wide eyed with truth
Sweetly gazing with animal eyes
Changing the roof
To shake off neighbouring spies
And oh to see your eyes light up
With quotes and quiet lust
We go over and over and over and over the same
You put me in you put me in a frame

There in the courtyard in the courtyard
There was a cat watching a rat
There in the junk room in the junk room
She would chat, chat
Playing the prisoner and the painter
Slow to react, slow to react
Fearing the fire oh the fire
Hoping we don’t make contact

Run away I run away

Is it my fault?
I was only listening
changing the bolt
I block out everything
And oh to see your eyes light up
An unexpected hug
Two hands to hold a cup
A funny kind of love

We go over and over and over and over the same
We go over and over and over and over again
We go over and over and over and over the same
You put me in you put me in a frame

about

Beth Porter Newton Stewart, UK

The songs from When The Lights Are Bright are dark, quirky, charming and ethereal Chamber-Pop, and depict themes such as fear, confusion, money, the weather and the odd cheesy love song, all carried by Beth’s pure and unaffected voice. Marshes have been likened to Cat Power, The Beatles, REM, This Is The Kit, Penguin Cafe Orchestra, Radiohead, The Incredible String Band and The Kinks. ... more
